Why you need contents insurance
Virtually everything you have bought, collected or inherited is with you, right now, in your home. From that CD collection to your sofa, each thing represents real expenditure across perhaps many years. Now imagine what you would do if you lost some, or in the worst case, all of it. Would you be able to afford to go and replace everything? You’re not alone - very few people could!
The majority of people, tenants and homeowners alike, choose to have the reassurance that contents insurance offers. There as a safety net, contents insurance protects against the unforeseen and if you need it, will help you replace items lost through a covered event, for example theft or fire. You can also extend a contents insurance policy to cover against accidental damage – this normally costs a small amount more, but increases peace of mind dramatically. You can even insure against loss of personal possessions outside the home. So you see, each policy can be tailored to what YOU need.
The average amount of contents people have is around £25,000, but you need to be sure that your contents are covered for the right value. It’s actually a lot easier to work out how much cover you would need than you might think. Work room by room, and look at everything in it. If you could turn the room upside-down and shake it, anything that falls out should be covered. Look at your clothes - how much would it cost to replace that coat? Or those jeans? Now what about the bed? Don’t forget the curtains or blinds if they’re yours!
Music & film collections soon add up in value, so how many CDs or DVDs do you own? You’ve probably got more than you think! TV? DVD player? Computer? Add it all up.
